Howdy, fungi family! After all the rain, we finally have sunshine! Which means mushrooms will be popping up all over the place. We hope you can get a fungi-filled frolick in the forest this weekend. But while you are cozied up with your email, let’s talk about the things goin’ on with Rich Life Farm. We have farmer’s market updates, fungi-related pest management research, a deep dive on Pioppino and a warm autumn mushroom soup recipe.

Farmer’s Markets

The perfect farmer’s market weather is upon us, come fill your baskets with local food. The mushrooms forecast for this month: Blue oysters, Queen oysters, Elm oysters, Lion’s mane, Comb tooth, Pioppino, and Chestnut.

Two important dates: There is NO Hyde Park Farmer’s market THIS Sunday, October 6th.

October is the last month of the outdoor Hyde Park Farmer’s Market. Starting November 3rd, the winter Hyde Park Market will begin indoors at Madtree Brewing in Oakley.

Farm Update

The Reishi garden is planted! We are trialing a new outdoor growing method this year. Pete built a large, rectangular frame within the greenhouse and filled it with an inch of water because dehydration seems to be a limiting factor last season. We mature the Reishi outside, so that it can have copious amounts of fresh oxygen and is forced to overcome outside stressors, like night and day temperature changes and variable amounts of sunlight. These stressors may stimulate growth of the mushroom and the medicinal compounds within it. There will be more updates as the Reishi conk out. Stay tuned!

Spotted Lantern Flies are an invasive planthopper that feed in large numbers on sap from grapevines and other perennial and annual plants, resulting in wilting, dieback and sooty mold damage. The destruction is so immense that the Ohio Department of Agriculture is asking you to kill these pests and report where you saw it, here. Would you believe me if I said, mushrooms could help? There is a strain of mushroom, Beuavaria bassiana, whose spores are deadly to Spotted Lantern Flies - an infected Spotted Lantern Fly pictured below from Unkle Fungus. He is a Pennsylvanian local testing the efficacy of the mushroom pesticide, so far with 100% mortality within 24-48 hours of contact. Super neat! Here is yet another way mushrooms can save the world. πŸ˜‰
 

Mushroom of the Month: Pioppino

Pioppino mushrooms are a beautiful earthy-toned and earthy-tasting mushroom. They have a dark brown cap and a long, tan stem. Pioppino mushrooms have flavor notes similar to tannins in red wine with a nutty undertone. They are delicious, but it’s the crunch of the stem that will keep you coming back.

These mushrooms are native to Italy and will rarely be found naturally growing in the Cincinnati area. The common name Pioppino derives from their favorite food source and habitat, Pioppos trees. You may also hear Black Poplar mushroom, Agrocybe aegerita, or Cyclocybe aegerita. The scientific name has updated as phylogenetics are being discovered on Pioppino mushrooms.

In the kitchen, we recommend treating them like you would asparagus. Drizzle some oil or butter, season with your favorite seasoning blends and roast in the oven until golden brown. The firm texture also lends itself to be great in a soup or stew. Perhaps pair it with your next glass of red wine, tannins on tannins. Most recipes that call for baby bella mushrooms, could use Pioppino instead.

Pioppino mushrooms are also healthy for you! There’s more to it than protein and fiber that commonly is associated with mushrooms. Pioppino mushrooms contain Cylindan which may have anti-cancer properties and indole derivatives which could be responsible for fighting free radicals. Study here. These two things make for great potential to boost your immune system and protect your body.

Recipe: Cream of Pioppino Mushroom Soup

What you need:

  • 1 large bag of Pioppino from RLF

  • 4 slices bacon, sliced 1/4"x1"

  • 1 Β½ cups chicken broth

  • β…“ cup yellow onion, rough chop

  • 1 clove garlic

  • 2 sprigs fresh thyme leaves

  • 3 tbsp butter

  • 3 tbsp flour

  • 1 Β½ cups half and half

  • Salt and pepper to taste

How to:

  1. Make the garnish: Place bacon, 1 cup mushrooms and sprigs thyme in medium stock pot and cook until crisp. Remove and set aside on paper towels.
    2. Make the mushroom part of soup: Add broth, onions, garlic and remaining mushrooms to the pot over medium high heat. Bring to boil, and lower to simmer for 15 minutes. Then use an immersion blender or standard blender to purΓ©e contents of pot. Place purΓ©e aside.
    4. Make the roux: In another pot, add butter and flour and cook over low-medium heat until scent is slightly "nutty" but roux is not darkened or scorched.
    5. Slowly whisk in half and half followed by the purΓ©e. Season with salt and pepper.
    6. Serve in bowls and top with bacon/mushroom garnish mixture.
